As of June 18, 2025, DOS has directed consular posts to resume F, M, and J visa interviews under expanded vetting procedures requiring full review of applicants’ online presence, including social media profiles. All otherwise-eligible applicants will be initially refused under INA §221(g) for further vetting, with consular officers documenting findings—including screenshots—and assessing potential derogatory information. This practice alert is being continuously updated—please refer back regularly for the latest developments. AILA’s DOS Liaison Committee encourages members to report examples of implementation.
