Registration Requirements with the DHS

Please check with an attorney whether you should register with the DHS. The Department of Homeland Security (DHS) states that the primary goal of Registration is to collect data on all noncitizens, which will then be used to locate, apprehend, and remove them efficiently. This new registration requirement began on April 11, 2025. Wondering if you need to register? You might not have to! If you've ever dealt with immigration or sent in certain applications, you're likely already in the system. Being registered includes things like having a green card (if you're a permanent resident), having had a work permit at any point, getting an I-94 when you came into the U.S. or when your status changed (like if you were granted asylum or a U visa), receiving an NTA or a similar notice to go to immigration court, having a Border Crossing Card, or a Landing Permit as a crewman. Even applying for a green card or temporary residence counts, even if your application wasn't approved (think of forms I-485, I-687, I-691, I-698, I-700).
